I wrote an ennonoya again at last, after 2.5 years!
The highlight of this fic was definitely me jotting down the story idea on a Google Doc right after reading the chapter, going to bed, then waking up the next day to find that Alex/asofthaven had written the exact same headcanon.
This was my third ennonoya, but it was my first time writing an ennonoya that involved and focused on direct interaction for an entire scene. All my previous ennonoyas have been character studies of some sort, so writing this one was both a challenge and breath of fresh air.
Overall, this was a short fic that I wrote during a slow work day, so it was minimally edited and I didn't put much deliberate thought into it and the chronology of events, instead letting it take its own course barring the few key ideas I wanted to pick apart.
I wanted to explore a few things in this fic - of course, trying to give myself closure for nishinoya's current absence in the manga, the wish for ennoshita to PLEASE join the others for the match (he's even seen watching the stream outdoors?! he's still got time to make it...), the fact that /both/ ennonoya haven't turned up yet, and filling in my own headcanons of ennoshita being nishinoya's therapist, nishinoya playing pro.
Establishing their aged-up dynamics was interesting to say the least - my ennonoyas have never been /outright/ ennonoyas, always subtle, watching out for each other kind of things, but running along the train of my current fic interests, something that's been resonating with me as we establish the aged-up canonverse is the idea of growing up apart, and the idea of missed connections.
I wanted to have some of that in this fic - that sense that they were looking at each other without realising the other was looking back. building that distance was easy, with nishinoya and his dreams of taking over japan, while ennoshita stays in sendai.
First we have ennoshita feeling like nishinoya has had his sights cast away from ennoshita for a long time. but nishinoya has been coming back to sendai regularly; it's hinted at that he meets up with ennoshita whenever he returns, and even makes the journey to ennoshita's clinic despite it being so out of the way, frequent enough that he even sees ennoshita's coworker as a friend of sorts.
Then we have nishinoya, who on the other hand, feels that ennoshita doesn't/can't watch him anymore since they're no longer in the same place, but he's kept in the dark that ennoshita does watch him play on stream, and even has a good idea of his match schedule.
Which is why, at the very end of the fic, in a moment that feels almost brushed off by both of them, nishinoya finds the courage to ask ennoshita to stay, and ennoshita does. I feel like it was very much an exploration of how they both had been closing the distance to each other, without the other quite realising it, and the moment when they consciously, in full view of each other, took a step forward.
