I did it...!!! I did it, after 3.5 years of writing for Haikyuu...!! I wrote an Ennoshita character study and a fic from Nishinoya's POV!
what a hell of a struggle it was though, writing this fic... I had the main themes before I started writing but they came out to be too much for the size of the fic and I had to do a lot of cutting to keep it readable, and then I couldn't quite wrap it up well enough.
I find it so ironic that I can finally write Nishinoya's voice with relative ease now, even though he hasn't even appeared post-timeskip yet, and that Ennoshita as a physical therapist has been incredible therapeutic (oi) to my return to writing Haikyuu... as they say in Japanese, I'm having such an Ennonoya MY BOOM now lololol
The fic started off with me wanting to explore the development of Chikara's character through Nishinoya's eyes, and tracing the journey of how he went from taping fingers to becoming a full-fledged physiotherapist. There were lots of thoughts about strength here, of the physical kind, but also of how you don't need to be on the court to be strong, of how Ennoshita is strong without his own realisation, of how Nishinoya sees it in his own way, of how Ennoshita gives Nishinoya strength. There were also thoughts here, of how sometimes it is not the going but the coming back that builds a relationship, of the ways they make space in their lives for each other, and how that is a strength in itself.
I also found an interesting parallel between Ennoshita being the literal personification of "strength", and Nishinoya being regarded as "strong", but even to the strongest, fear is still irrational and existent. Nishinoya taking strength from Ennoshita's presence; Ennoshita being the only one who is allowed to touch him, Ennoshita being the only one in the space that the rest of the team has given him during the Inarizaki match was something I really wanted to include and I think it got across in my writing!
Ewa commented while she was reading my fic that, "In the end it all boils down to Nishinoya always coming back to Ennoshita, right?" and yeah - at the heart of it, I think that's what I wanted to get to. Ultimately, Ennoshita is Nishinoya's 居心地, the place he finds comfort and strength in, even if he doesn't say so himself.
I felt like I've gotten much better at Nishinoya's voice too! Writing dialogue for them was relatively easier this time compared to "whisk you away", and I guess being able to trace their relationship from first year to timeskip allowed me to play with his voice a little more than usual. I also still think that writing Naruko did wonders for writing Nishinoya LOL. Overall I think this isn't my best fic for them (that honour still lies with molten gold) but I am content with this lovemail for Ennoshita Chikara!
